BDR (Business Development Representative)

The salesperson responsible for creating demand that did not exist yet — outbound prospecting into companies that have never heard of you.

Also known as: business development representative · business development rep · outbound SDR

What is BDR (Business Development Representative)?

A Business Development Representative (BDR) is a specialist in outbound: identifying companies that fit, researching them, making first contact, and creating interest where none existed. That is the difference from an SDR, who works inbound leads that already raised a hand. BDRs are measured on meetings created from cold, which is the hardest number in sales to move. In Europe a BDR costs roughly €40,000 to €60,000 fully loaded, needs three to six months to ramp, and spends most of the working day on research and list building rather than on conversations — which is precisely the part that automates.

What a BDR actually spends the day on

The job description says “creating opportunities”. The calendar says something else. Across most outbound teams the day splits roughly into finding companies that fit, researching them well enough to say something specific, finding and verifying a contact, writing the approach, following up on earlier approaches, and updating the CRM. Actual conversations with prospects occupy a small minority of it.

This matters because the expensive, hard-to-hire part of a BDR — the ability to hold a difficult first conversation — is the part they get least time to do.

Why the role is under economic pressure

Loaded cost of €40,000 to €60,000. Three to six months to ramp. Average tenure around eighteen months. Do the arithmetic and a large share of what you pay for is spent on someone who is either not yet productive or already leaving.

None of that is an argument that BDRs are bad at their jobs. It is an argument that a role built almost entirely out of repeatable research is a strange thing to staff exclusively with people.

Outbound in Europe is a compliance role too

This is the part that separates European outbound from the American playbook most BDR training is based on, and it is not optional.

Unsolicited B2B email requires prior consent in Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Poland, Greece, Denmark, Czechia and the Netherlands. Belgium, Finland and Portugal distinguish a generic company address from a named individual. Sweden and Ireland permit it where the message genuinely relates to the recipient’s professional role. Genuinely opt-out markets are a short list, headed by France.

Telephone is analysed separately and often lands differently — Germany permits a B2B call on presumed consent, but only where you can evidence that this business would have an objective interest in this offer. And an automated call is a third category again, stricter than both. The full map is in our guide to cold outreach law in Europe.

A BDR who does not know which of those applies is not a productivity problem. They are a liability, and the exposure sits with the employer.

The three ways to get the function

  • Hire. Slowest and most expensive, but the capability and the records stay with you.
  • Outsource. Fastest to start, cheapest per month, and you rent rather than own — the data, the working messaging and the compliance trail leave with the contract.
  • Build a system. Highest upfront cost, lowest running cost, and the asset accumulates. We compare the three properly here.

FAQ

What is the difference between a BDR and an SDR?

Direction. A BDR does outbound — creating interest in companies that have never heard of you. An SDR does inbound — qualifying people who already raised a hand. Many companies use the titles interchangeably, and where only one exists it usually covers both.

What is an AI BDR?

A system that performs the mechanical portion of outbound autonomously: finding companies that match a profile, researching them against defined signals, scoring fit, finding published contacts, and drafting approaches in the local language. The credible versions route every contact through a compliance check first. The ones that do not are selling you volume and keeping the liability with you.

Do I still need a person if I have an AI BDR?

Yes, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. In consent-required markets the first approach to a business that has not consented is made by a person, because automated calling is a stricter legal category with no business-to-business exception in Germany. What changes is that the person spends their time on conversations instead of on spreadsheets.
